Modi gifts Russian translation of Tamil classic to Putin at BRICS summit
PM Modi gifted Russian translation of Thirukkural to Putin at BRICS summit, highlighting cultural ties. Trade target of $100 billion by 2030 and industrial cooperation discussed. Details on nuclear and critical minerals cooperation remain unclear.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented Russian President Vladimir Putin with a Russian translation of the Tamil classic 'Thirukkural' during bilateral talks at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi. The gift, made on the sidelines of the summit, underscores the deepening strategic partnership between India and Russia, which is being expanded beyond traditional areas of cooperation.
The Thirukkural, a revered work of Tamil literature comprising 1,330 couplets on ethics, governance, and human conduct, was chosen to reflect India's rich cultural heritage. By offering the Russian-language edition, Modi aimed to make the text accessible to Putin, symbolising a bridge between the two nations' intellectual traditions.
The meeting between Modi and Putin coincided with discussions on broadening economic and industrial ties. According to sources, the leaders are expected to focus on achieving a $100 billion trade target by 2030, along with measures to enhance business-to-business opportunities and improve access for Indian companies in the Russian market. Industrial cooperation, including the INNOPROM India initiative, is also likely to be a key topic, with areas such as railways, tunnelling, and steel value chain development under consideration.
Cooperation in civil nuclear energy, including the nuclear fuel cycle and life-cycle support, is another area of potential collaboration. Additionally, the two leaders may discuss expanding cooperation in critical minerals, as India seeks to strengthen supply chains for strategic and high-technology industries. Fertiliser cooperation through joint-venture projects and the mobility of skilled workers are also expected to be on the agenda.
The details on nuclear and critical minerals cooperation remain unclear, as no specific agreements or commitments have been disclosed. The focus of the discussions appears to be on expanding existing partnerships and exploring new avenues for collaboration.
The BRICS summit, hosted by India, provides a platform for major global powers to address shared challenges and opportunities. The Modi-Putin talks reflect the growing importance of India-Russia relations in the context of shifting global dynamics. While the summit has highlighted cultural and economic ties, the full scope of the agreements and commitments remains to be seen as the discussions progress.
