Chennai: Dr. C. Sabarigirinathan, Principal of Ragas Dental College & Hospital, stated that in the current era where modern technologies like artificial intelligence are bringing about significant changes in the dental field, it is essential to treat patients with humanity and care.
At the 2026 Convocation of Ragas Dental College & Hospital in Chennai, Dr. C. Sabarigirinathan addressed the students who completed BDS and MDS courses, saying:
Receiving a degree is not just the culmination of years of education, but also the beginning of a new journey with professional responsibility, social service, and humanity. Behind the achievements of the students are their hard work, perseverance, guidance from teachers, and sacrifices of their parents. Today's graduates carry the trust and expectations of society along with their degrees.
From the invention of electricity to the growth of the internet, and now the advancement of artificial intelligence, technology has brought significant changes in human life and the medical field. In the dental field, 3D imaging, computer-aided dental planning, artificial intelligence, robotics, and tissue regeneration techniques have created new opportunities in diagnosing diseases, planning treatment, and providing precise medical services.
Technology helps medical professionals perform tasks faster and more accurately. However, humanity cannot be replaced. Artificial intelligence can help analyze medical images and detect diseases. Advanced tools can improve the accuracy of treatment. However, understanding patients' fears, respecting their emotions, approaching them with care, and gaining their trust are the human responsibilities of medical professionals.
Dentists should not view patients coming for treatment merely as medical problems. Each patient has a personal life, family, concerns, and expectations of recovery. Therefore, treatment should not only cure the disease but also understand the patient's emotions. Use technology as the right tool, knowledge as strength, medical protocols as guidance, and humanity as the foundation to act.
The success of a dentist is not determined by the number of treatments they perform or the advanced equipment they use. The quality of treatment provided to patients, the integrity in making medical decisions, and the changes they bring to patients' lives are what determine true professional excellence. Medical professionals must have a sense of responsibility along with medical skills. They must have the ability to make correct decisions with scientific knowledge and humility along with professional growth.
In this era where information is easily accessible, information and the ability to use it correctly should not be considered together. Artificial intelligence can answer many questions, but asking the right questions, examining scientific evidence, understanding the limitations of technology, and taking responsibility for medical decisions are the duties of medical professionals. Therefore, medical professionals must use technology responsibly and never abandon their own medical decision-making ability.
Receiving a degree in dental education does not end there. Since the medical field is continuously evolving, medical professionals must keep improving their knowledge. They must engage in scientific research, continuous medical education programs, and learn new evidence-based treatment methods.
Postgraduate degree holders should not only be doctors but also educators, researchers, mentors, and leaders, contributing their share. Their work should not only enhance scientific knowledge but also improve the quality of treatment and guide the next generation of dentists. Graduates with undergraduate degrees should gradually develop their skills, face challenges without hesitation, and seek guidance from experienced professionals when needed. A mindset of acknowledging what they do not know and continuously learning is what helps become a better doctor.
The excellence of an educational institution is not only reflected through its classrooms, laboratories, and medical facilities but also through the qualities of its students, the professional standards they uphold, and the services they provide to society. In this regard, the work of the college's principal, vice principal, professors, and administrative staff who contributed to the students' education and development is commendable. Teachers who provided knowledge and experience to the students, and parents and family members who supported them during their educational journey, deserve gratitude and appreciation.
Graduates should excel in technology while preserving humanity. Even if they have confidence in their skills, they must cultivate the habit of continuous learning. They must never compromise on honesty and the well-being of patients for professional success. They must constantly ask themselves whether they have made a meaningful difference in someone's life through their treatment. This approach will be the hallmark of a good medical professional.
Dentists who integrate scientific ability, technological knowledge, ethical courage, humanity, and social responsibility will lead the medical field in the future. The graduates are encouraged to continue learning, use new technologies, and serve society with dedication.
