Assam Ex-Bureaucrat, 2 Journalists Join BJP Ahead Of State Bypoll
Three individuals, including a former district collector, joined BJP ahead of Nagaon bypoll. BJP leaders highlighted Sharma's experience. No indication of ticket allocation yet.

Former Assam Nagaon District Collector Debasish Sharma, along with senior journalists Lenin Saurav Bora and Gunjan Kalita, joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday. The move comes days before the Nagaon bypoll, raising questions about potential ticket allocation for Sharma.
BJP leaders, including Assam BJP president and MP Dilip Saikia, highlighted Sharma's administrative experience and social ties to Assam. Saikia described Sharma as a 'sensitive person' dedicated to the people of Assam, emphasizing his contributions to the state's cultural, social and administrative life. 'His joining will give further strength to the party,' Saikia said.
Saikia clarified that Sharma had not approached the party for a ticket before joining. 'We have a panel of candidates,' he stated, noting that election preparations were already underway. However, he added that the party could consider Sharma if a request came from him or from people in Nagaon. The state and central leadership would decide on Sharma's role within the party, Saikia said.
The three joined the party at an event attended by senior leaders, including Cabinet Ministers Piyush Hazarika, Jayanta Malla Baru, Kaushik Rai, and Nagaon MLA Rupak Sharma. The move coincides with increased political activity in Nagaon as the BJP and other parties prepare for the bypoll.
No public response from Sharma, Bora, or Kalita has been reported. The BJP has not confirmed whether Sharma will be considered for a ticket. The bypoll is expected to be a key test for the BJP's local strength, particularly in a region with diverse political dynamics.
The development underscores the significance of the Nagaon bypoll in shaping the BJP's strategy in Assam. While Sharma's background in administration and social engagement is seen as a potential asset, the party's decision on his role remains pending. The absence of a formal response from Sharma or his associates leaves the matter open to interpretation.
The bypoll is part of a broader political landscape in Assam, where multiple parties are vying for influence. The BJP's move to bring in Sharma and the journalists may be an attempt to bolster its local appeal. However, the outcome of the bypoll will depend on a range of factors, including voter sentiment and the effectiveness of the party's campaign.
The situation remains fluid, with no indication of further developments from the BJP or the candidates. The absence of a clear response from Sharma or others means that the full implications of his joining the party are yet to be determined. As the bypoll approaches, the focus will shift to the campaign strategies and voter engagement efforts of all parties involved.
